10 Tips for Setting and Achieving Your Running Goals – Tip 1

Define your goals. You have already determined that you want to run. The first step in achieving your running goals is to define them clearly. Be specific about what you want to achieve and when you want to achieve it. This may be health-related, enjoying nature or losing weight, for example. But really think about it and ensure it is clear in your mind. This will help you stay focused and motivated.

Make a plan. Once you have defined your goals, make a plan to achieve them. This plan should include specific steps you need to take and a timeline for completion. Having a plan will help you stay organized and on track. This shouldn’t be something you beat yourself up over, but a map to ensure you get to your destination. Think about practical logistics, nutrition, clothing and anything else you need to consider.

Start small and build gradually. Make your goals realistic. One of the most common mistakes runners make is setting unrealistic, difficult goals. Instead, start small and build gradually. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, start by setting a goal to run a 5k, then a 10k, and so on until you are ready to tackle the full marathon distance. If you are inexperienced or regard yourself as unfit don’t be afraid to walk. A run-walk-run-walk activity will still be part of the journey. Run for a while then walk until you feel like running again. Little by little.

Set up a schedule. Having a schedule is essential for achieving your running goals. Make sure to schedule your runs in advance and stick to them. This will help keep you accountable and ensure that you are making progress towards your goal. This is the practical logistics in Tip 2. For example, if you have young children when can you do the run? Working a schedule out to fit this in makes it easier to get out and stops you from making excuses not to run. If you can only run at night do you need a night-friendly location etc?

Ensure you track your progress. Tracking your progress is important for staying motivated and seeing how far you’ve come. Keep a running log or use a fitness app to track your distance, time, and pace. Use this information to set new goals and measure your progress. The run-walk-run-walk will get easier, the running part will lengthen. The run around the park that took twenty minutes will become nineteen then eighteen and so on. You can only evidence this if you record it. Many people use running watches that not only track run metrics but share them with an associated app on their phone. Other people use apps with their phones but means you take the phone with you however, again great metrics are then available on the app.

Cross-train with supplementary activities. Cross-training is an excellent way to improve your overall fitness and reduce the risk of injury. Incorporate strength training, yoga, or other forms of exercise into your training plan to help you achieve your running goals. Most people will find that just running might become a little dull and adding another activity will keep you engaged and assist you in other ways. For example, yoga may keep you loose and flexible, strength training can tone your upper body and enable an all around fitness.
